Welcome to the Fitness Books Library Section of the site. Here you'll find
books, magazines, videos and software on all kinds of fitness topics that I personally have read,
subscribed to, and/or used
and can recommend whole-heartedly. These are in addition to the Body for LIFE
series by Bill Phillips.
I believe that you can tell a lot about a person by
looking
at their bookcase. Go ahead...try it! Does yours reflect your
interests and passions? Maybe some of them current pursuits and/or some
maybe efforts fallen by the wayside...my bookcase sure does!
Well...except for the Time/Life "How to lay ceramic tile in
your bathroom" series I bought...never got around to that because I
really wasn't that interested in it...
This Reading Room Section contains a bunch of links to
interesting articles and material on the net that I visit periodically.
Nutrition, body building, medical research, etc...
Anyway, enjoy my library and check out the
On eBay! Section...I love eBay and constantly find
great deals and stuff you can't find anywhere else there! I've optimized the searches in this section to "watch" for
very specific items of interest...very cool! Enjoy...

Books
I love to read. Always have. Sometimes it's a long, leisurely
event and sometimes it's a sprint with very few rest stops ending in a lot of
labored breath and perspiration. While I believe that websites and ebooks are
good sources of information, books offer a comfort and convience that can only
be felt when in an appropriately "curled up" position (mine is more of a
hunched-over, legs everywhere kind of thing...) with a good one. These have each
seen my curled up position more than once: |

The New Encyclopedia of Modern
Bodybuilding : The Bible of Bodybuilding, Fully Updated and Revised
by
Arnold Schwarzenegger
Arnold Schwarzenegger hasn't competed as a
bodybuilder since he won the Mr. Olympia title in 1980, but he remains
the sport's No. 1 icon. Oh...and he's the governor of California.
Today's bodybuilders may have bigger muscles than Arnold ever did, but
everyone inside and outside the iron game gives him credit for
exponentially broadening the popularity of physique training.
With this updated Encyclopedia (it was originally published in 1985),
Schwarzenegger wraps his huge arms around the entire sport. He hits the
history of bodybuilding, the champions (he's quite generous in his
praise of predecessors, contemporaries, and successors alike), the
training systems. Some of the information is more bodybuilding lore than
science; for example, exercises are said to "expand the rib cage" or
develop the "inner" or "outer" chest, all physiological impossibilities.
But they're still good exercises, and the book includes every movement
imaginable for every muscle group.
If you love the sport of bodybuilding, you'll want this book in your
library, if for no other reason than for the hundreds of photos of the best
physiques in the history of the sport. And, in a pinch, the 800-page
encyclopedia can fill in nicely for a missing dumbbell.

Smart
Exercise : Burning Fat, Getting Fit
by
Covert Bailey
Covert Bailey is a master at making physiology easy to
understand for the average person. If you are looking to improve
your health and get into better shape, then you should have this
title on your bookshelf. It does a great job of helping you to
understand what works and what doesn't.
Much like Bill Phillip's book Body For Life, this book
stresses that exercise is the key to reducing fat and improving
overall health. It explains why diet alone won't help you to
lose weight permanently, and what the benefits of cardiovascular
exercise are.
When you finish reading this book, you will have a basic
understanding of how the human body works, what makes people
gain weight, how muscle is formed, how fat is formed and how to
take it off permanently. Medical techno-babble is translated
into terms that absolutely anyone can understand. His humor and
amusing metaphors make for an enjoyable reading experience as
well.
...I read this book over and over again. It is packed with
useful information, good science and great advice.

Priming the Anabolic Environment: A
Practical, Scientific Guide to the Art and Science of Building Muscles
by
William D. BrinkI read this book a while ago, and it is
still the best of its kind. He pretty much sums up everything a person
needs to know to put on muscle mass. It's very practical and easy to
read. It's a short book, but he does not use a 100 pages on silly
recipes either, which is how most books are done. It's 100% good info. A
must read for anyone who wants to put on muscle or is a fan of Will
Brink. I certainly enjoy his writing style.

Muscle & Fitness Many of the
reviews you might read for this Weider Publication will complain about
too many ads. No doubt about it, there are lots of them but that's
actually one of the things I like about it. Advertisements are actually
a great way to keep up with what is going on in the marketplace and thus
the industry in general.
Other
than that, I use this magazine for little more than getting ideas for
new exercises so that my routine doesn't get stale. In that sense,
Muscle and Fitness is a treasure trove of information on new and
interesting ways to work out. Some of the routines are inappropriate for
beginners or even intermediate lifters, but the principles remain the
same. There is a great emphasis on proper form and a general disapproval
of lifting heavier weights than you are capable. Exercises are well
described with examples of proper form and thorough explanations
provided by professionals. As a previous reviewer said, these
professionals sometimes contradict one another, but as in any
profession, opinions differ and all that can be done is to present the
information and allow the reader to judge what is best for them.

Men's Health Magazine I used to subscribe to Men's
Health Magazine because it is a little more "well rounded" than your
average body building or muscle magazine. Ok...Ok...that means there are
more articles on how to improve your sex life than those other magazines
but the fitness information is usable for the most part.
If you are 150 pounds, sleeping burns 61 calories an hour, kissing
burns 68 calories an hour, and doing sit-ups, pull-ups and jumping jacks
burns 544 calories an hour! You know...interesting junk like that!
Sorry for the women out there...if you have a suggestion on a good
women's health magazine that you like, drop me a line, tell me why and
include a link. Although, an interesting statistic is that women account
for a large portion of Men's Health subscriptions...

Better Homes and Gardens So much
good information from folks who have been cooking, stocking kitchens,
organizing space, and helping improve the quality of not just Homes &
Gardens, but peoples lives since...well...forever, I think.
I don't subscribe to the snail mail magazine but the
BH&G website is a worthy online magazine with plenty of recipes
and cooking tips, a good store section and a strong search engine.
A few more ads than I like but at least they are
creative and clever! ;-)

I know, I know...I really get tired of junk eBooks
FREE! for your email subscription, or $29.95 with a "My dog ate it
guarantee" too. But sometimes I find ones that offer exceptional
value...strike that...that completely OVER DELIVER on great content that
I pass them on to others. |

Muscle Building Nutrition
by
Will Brink
I never though I'd really be able to explain,
from a physiology standpoint, why Adenosine Tri-Phosphate (ATP) is
ideally depleted without resorting to the Krebs-cycle and why creatine
monohydrate helps by providing phosphor-ion, regenerating the ATP for
faster recovery and more muscle energy....but I can!
That's because of Will Brink's great combination of writing style and
knowledge. I cannot recommend his ebooks (or any articles he writes)
highly enough. Check it out

Diet Supplements Revealed
by
Will Brink
Although you will find many websites, and indeed offline
publications, who claim to offer legitimate, independent advice
on diet supplements and fat loss, the reality is that most
information out there is written by people who's real objective
is to actually sell (mainly worthless) supplements; and their
opinions simply cannot be blindly trusted without first doing
your own research.
What you need is completely independent, proven advice, (proven
both scientifically & in real world situations), written by a
genuine and unbiased expert. That's what makes the information
Will Brink puts together to read so unique. Straight, to the
point, in easy to understand language.
